explore. collaborate. thrive.
Photo II is an intermediate level course for those who have completed Lens and Learn’s Introduction to Photography course and are looking to further expand their photographic knowledge. The heavily assignment-based structure encourages visual and intellectual growth as students begin to develop their personal photographic vision. This structure will be paired with a strong emphasis on peer critique upon assignment completion to improve student work in a collaborative, supportive, and constructive manner. Critique sessions will also be an opportunity for students to reflect on their own unique creative processes. Furthermore, post-processing skills will be implemented into the course curriculum. Through exploring common styles of photography and fine-tuning composition techniques, students will come away from Photo II with a robust and dynamic portfolio of images. This three-week long group session meets online, twice a week for 1.5 hours.
day 1.
Review of common photographic techniques from the introductory course while expanding on more advanced composition strategies. After the lecture, a demonstration and hands-on exercise will take place to refine visual communication tactics in preparation for the first assignment.
day 2.
Peer critique etiquette overview along with the first round of viewing images created from Assignment 1. Lecture topics include specific styles and genres of photography in addition to common practices and techniques that are used within each genre in an effort to develop photo analyzation skills.
day 3.
After the critique session of Assignment 2, students will experience a demonstration of PhotoPea, a free online editor and Photoshop alternative. Students will learn proper toning practices such as correcting exposure, color temperature, and cropping slightly if needed. The goal is to gain proficiency in making digital adjustments on their own photos to elevate their work.
day 4.
Class begins with a critique session of Assignment 3. Discussion on how to find stories through a breakdown of different categories of visual storytelling.
day 5.
Class begins with a critique session of Assignment 4. Students will collaborate together to curate and select the images for the final virtual gallery show, an exercise that culminates all elements discussed throughout the course to create a strong narrative and sequence of images.
Day 6.
Students will share their visual source journals–an individual account of collected creative inspirations. Closing reflective remarks and program evaluation discussion. Review resources and educational opportunities. Final virtual gallery show, friends and family are invited to join!
