This immersive experience provides a thorough and comprehensive overview of introductory photography, geared towards young photography enthusiasts ages 11-17. Our supportive and inclusive virtual classroom environment fosters a unique sense of camaraderie, leaving students feeling connected with one another and their communities. The program will cover the mechanics and inner workings of the camera while expanding creative practices and strengthening critical thinking skills. Group sessions meet online during a two-hour time slot. Assignments are supported by lessons and hands-on demonstrations.

 
 

 

day 1.

Students will begin exploring photography through a historical lens by learning influential photographers and critically analyzing their work. We will then review the evolution of the camera, from analog film processes to digital photography as we know it today.

day 2.

Introduction to photographic processes and fundamentals of digital photography. Topics include digital camera operation using manual settings. Students will learn how to properly hold their cameras and begin practicing proper exposure compensation. 

day 3.

Discussion on composition basics and how to arrange elements in the frame. We will review the importance of lighting and different lighting techniques. Topics include file management and digital toning. Students will develop the practice of self-reflection upon assignment completion as well as peer critique etiquette.

 

day 4.

Open discussion on photographic ethical practices and principles that guide sharing photographs.

day 5.

A guest speaker from the photography industry to join us. Critique of work made during the week before finalizing the sequence of images for our gallery show.

Day 6.

Closing reflective remarks and program evaluation discussion. Review resources and educational opportunities. Final gallery show, friends and family are invited to join! Certificates upon program completion will be mailed home.
